80 Years After WWII: Letters Tell the Story of a 19-Year-Old Tail Gunner Who Never Came Home
Have you ever lost something precious that never turned up but you still think about long after losing it? This “I Have a Story” feature introduces you to a man from Goochland, Virginia who is still mourning one great loss 80 years later. Stanley Richmond has been wondering where his beloved older brother Robert is for eight decades. The 95-year-old says Robert was his role model. The elder sibling wanted to serve the nation in the skies during WWII so he joined the Army Air Corp. During Robert’s 22nd mission over Europe his B-24 was hit in February of 1945. Robert was severely wounded. The crew members bailed out. Each man survived. The 19-year-old from Virginia did not. He is still missing in action. Stanley says not knowing where his brother rests still hurts 80 years later. Stanley holds onto and reads the 75 letters his brother sent home during the war to keep him close. To preserve his brother's legacy he is letting go of something special. Story by Greg McQuade & photojournalist Enza Marcy. September 14, 2025.

Climate change is threatening the landmark and the artifacts related to English, Native and African Americans buried below.
